Sparks of Realization and Self-Respect

Tweet As muddled as my mind was for most of high school, some things began to become clear during those years. First and foremost, the idea that, among my peers, I was actually a worthwhile person began to creep in. That was mostly due to finally shedding the destructive crush of years prior and finding… Continue reading Sparks of Realization and Self-Respect

When the seeds first sprouted

Tweet I tend to make a big deal out of my time in high school. How I make a big deal out of it has slid into different territory over the years. As I’ve gotten further away from it, the distance has allowed me to appreciate it more. Continued “personal archaeological expeditions” into that long-ago… Continue reading When the seeds first sprouted

Looking Ahead to Looking Back

Tweet In just over a week, I have a high school reunion coming up. Since my class has never been a group to do anythingn quite the normal way, it’s a 16 year reunion. (We really did try for the typical 5, 10 and 15 year ones, but never quite pulled it all together–one of… Continue reading Looking Ahead to Looking Back

Senior Prom, Class of 1993

Tweet Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, I’m getting back in touch with people from high school I haven’t spoken with in about 15 years. That brings with it a rush of memories, old anxieties and, of course, pictures we all look at and wonder “What was wrong with us?” Among those pictures, some… Continue reading Senior Prom, Class of 1993

Back in 2005, I was inspired during on online comment exchange to start in on a book about crushes. More specifically, the rules regarding crushes. With a little more reflection, that turned into my idea for How to Crush Without Being Crushed. The main theme to the whole book is that you can learn a lot about yourself from the crushes you get on others. Basically a “how to learn from the relationships you’ll never have and apply that knowledge to the ones you will.” The theory is all anchored in being able to tell fantasy from reality and, at one point or another, being able to detach yourself from your situation enough to clearly see where your influences are coming from and where your wants end and your needs begin. This site is the working document for that theory and a collection of stories, musings and research regarding relationships in general. Praise for WithoutBeingCrushed.com: “I never read any of these series posts before because they were so long, but I’m glad I read this one. It’s wonderful. It reminds me of “The Missing Piece” by Shel Silverstein.” “Very insightful. :) I enjoyed reading.” “This website is a godsend! I’m…
